Next Wednesday the 8th of May, the New Designers Fashion Show will take place at Xara Lodge Malta. Until Wednesday I will be shining the spotlight on each of these ‘new designers’, a different one each day.
Today we shine the spotlight on Marie Grech
When did you first start to get interested in fashion design?
Fashion design has always played an important role in my life. Since the early teenage years I always kept up with all that was going on in the fashion world. In fact I was always creative when coming to pick up clothes for myself, altering them the way I want. Regarding these choices taking tailoring courses at an early age followed up by a fashion design course have helped me bring out the artistic me in fashion
When did you actually start?
Started way back in sixth form days where I first exhibited my collection in a fashion show organized by the school itself. This experience has given me a boost to start taking part in other fashion shows such the Malta Fashion Week 🙂
Tell us something about the collection you have designed for fashion week?
The collection I have created for MFW 2013 a/w Bouton de Rose, consist of mainly 6 pieces varying from suits to evening dresses. I have worked with materials such as lace, satin and silk chiffon. Applying handmade embroidery, appliqué and beading to these well selected materials actually brings out the originality in this collection ! All of these dresses are tailored by myself. Apart these I also did 4 leather handbags to compliment each look in this collection.

Which is your all-time favourite piece that you have created?
It’s a quite simple black and gold evening dress I made for myself with an all over sequinned skirt.
From where do you draw on for inspiration and are there are any other designers that inspire you?
It’s something that just happens to catch my eye or interest me. It could be anything. Designers I admire are Gareth Pugh for his eccentric architectural designs, late Alexander McQueen for his dramatic creations and Chanel for the classic elaborate style.
