Photoshop and REALITY

Yesterday I asked a question on facebook – Bridal photos should not be edited because they are reflecting reality” – agree or disagree ? – the response was mixed, some people want the ‘fantasy’ to be perfect and look perfect..others want a higher dose of reality.

Truth is the biggest bridal alterations happen before the photo editing. I hate going to weddings and seeing a different-looking bride, there are some brides who request makeup such that they’ve never ever worn before and never will again. Some makeup artists are clever enough to succeed in giving these clients exactly what they want, which in the end is a face that isn’t theirs. I don’t blame the makeup artists, their job is to make the bride happy, however that may be, but I don’t get why the bride wants to look like a different person.
As regards photo editing there’s nothing wrong with editing the light or a pimple that’s not a permanent mark on a face but when it comes to weight, shape or body proportions, I feel that it would be impossible to look at a photo of myself and be proud of something that’s not me.
I echo this sentiment not just in relation to bridal photography but any shoot that’s not a story but about someone ‘real’.

Very good point! Most people are so "edited" before their wedding pictures that complaining about post wedding edits to the photos seems redundant. I prefer a more natural look. And I wouldn't want my size or anything edited in the photo… But if I had a weird pimple that day, I'd expect it to be edited out 😛

I agree to what u say. And, as long as the person is happy, i dont think photoshopping shd be a problem. It is not going to mislead as in those advertisements.. It is a bride and groom's personal album. They can do it any way they wish it to be. 🙂 That said, i am not a big fan of body altering photoshops either. 🙂

most brides ended up looking very different from how they usually will due to the bridal make up. photoshopping is still not as extensive, i guess? i dont see either as a problem. the focus should be on the bride and groom. if looking vastly difference "irl" and unbelievably good-looking is what they want, then they shouldn't be judged poorly for it.

I've never saw that level of PS in bridal photography. I guess that changed body shapes in editing is not a trend around here.

I feel that bridal photoshop editing can be done, but not too extreme that even other people can't recognise the bride. =)

I believe that photographs should be enhanced a little so that they look better but their core elements should not be changed completely. I basically dislike too many changes! GIG love 🙂

There's definitely a difference between editing and retouching for me. A lot of brides simply want their pictures to look perfect, and that's totally fine. A hint of retouching is harmless and fine.

I'm fine with minimal editing for whatever occasion, weddings included. But that said, the pressure is on the mua or photographer to make a photo stand out in perfection

I think it all depends to what degree we edit the shots.
Make it look more appealing, sharpen it etd, but do not change the reality by removing your freckles or adding a perfect skin tonne.
In the end of the day photos are our memories not a dreamland wanna be.
